On International Women's Day, March 8, 2017, Elaine and a dozen friends installed the Butterfly Tree in Land Park, Sacramento, CA. The idea was to create the "Butterfly Effect," the premise that the flutter of a butterfly's wings can start a typhoon on the other side of the world. In other words, a small change can create a huge impact. The idea was that the community installation would promote hope and inspiration about and for women. Approximately 75 butterflies with messages were hand made and hung on the chosen tree. Blank tags and markers were left encouraging people to add their own message and butterflies. The tree has been embraced by the community and now there are over 250 messages with about 100 butterflies added to the tree. It has endured rain storms and wind, with passersby retrieving messages or butterflies blown down so that they can be hung back up on the tree. There have been many great stories shared and connections made under the tree since that first day. People love to read the messages as they walk by. A women's group has formed by several women who met there. One man claims he and his father planted the tree in the mid 1980's!
